I have a new nature sketchbook class starting on March 24th through Lake Tahoe Community College. We will be diving into all things nature, including trees, rocks, and birds. Join us as we learn how to create neutral colors and learn to see the shapes in the natural world.
Classes are every Thursday evening from 6-7pm PST. Please use the link below to register.
The weather has begun to warm up here in the Southwestern United States. Hot days are ahead and it has me thinking about summer thunderstorms. You can see them roll in from a distance; the sky goes grey and dark. When it happens at sunset, amazing colors light up the sky. Monsoon season is the only thing I like about our hot summers, a brief respite from the hot sun.
The saguaros are big and fat from water storage and hillsides are covered in flowers. I hope to get out and enjoy more of the blooms while they last. I seem to go more of a leisurely pace, taking in all the sites and letting nature inspire me.
It plays such a large part in my painting process. Songs inspire me, rhythms keep me going, and words sneak their way onto my canvases. Musical tunes have had a relationship in my studio since I picked up a paintbrush. But never have I thought about music and art the way I did today.
I recently finished this piece I have wanted to paint for a long time. If you follow me on Instagram, you know how much I love to travel. This past fall, my family and I escaped to Baja California for some much need relaxation. From the airplane, you can see where the dry desert land greets the coolness of the ocean.
This week's Deconstructing Color palette only resulted in one finished piece. I worked most of the week on her, pushing and pulling color. When I first created it, it began as an abstract artwork as I simply played with the colors in the palette. The palette was supposed to be the colors found in heirloom tomatoes, but as it turns out, those are the same colors found in autumn leaves.
I took to the streets the other day to capture some of the amazing street art that can be found here in Phoenix. I love street art! It is artists coming together to create something beautiful for the city. I just recently started photographing it and I knew that I wanted to show off some of the beautiful murals we have here in Phoenix.
It is interesting what you can find when you are out exploring. A few weeks ago I was walking through the woods and happened upon this downed branch in the middle of my path. Someone had obviously used the upright tree to hold up the fallen branch, but I thought the shape of the upright branch was quite interesting. It reminded me of the yoga pose, Tree Pose.
